Myths About Vitiligo Treatment

Myths About Vitiligo TreatmentGenerally, there are three myths about Vitiligo treatment that exist in the medical profession. The first myth is recognized as “impossible” which has been clearly proved as not true since majority of Vitiligo patients have achieved satisfactory results after treatment. “Oral psoralens” is recognized as the second myth about Vitiligo treatment, which leads thinking that probably some Vitiligo treatments can cause damages to liver. In fact, this is not the case and oral psoralens have been proved as not toxic to the liver.

The third myth about the Vitiligo treatment is that the patients can get cancer of the skin if he/she is treated through psoralen + UVA (also known as PUVA) Vitiligo treatment method. This is also not the case and has been proved as not true, because PUVA therapy is carried out for a limited number (not more than 150 in number) of treatments and none of the studies have shown that it caused any kind of skin cancer to the patients.

However, some cases of PUVA treatments for psoriasis have shown that the patients, who received minimum of double number of PUVA treatments as of Vitiligo patients (minimum 250 PUVA treatments), got curable skin cancer (squamous cell cancers).
